The Outwin 2016 American Portraiture Today catalog includes the works of the 43 finalists of the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition. Every three years the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery invites artists 18 and older to participate in the nation’s most prestigious portraiture competition. Artists created portraits in an array of mediums, ranging from paintings to sculptures. In 2016, 43 finalists were selected to exhibit their work in the travelling exhibition.
The competition is named after its founder; Virginia Outwin Boochever, who was enthralled by the power of portraiture. It can give viewers a glimpse into the subject’s private life, allowing for a connection between both the artist and the subject.
